Master thesis project - X-Ray source and optics characterization

This is an opportunity for Master students in engineering, physics, electronics,  mechatronics or similar to explore and learn about our unique X-Ray technolgy in a company with a strong engineering culture.

Project description


This thesis project is focused on a X-ray source based on the MetalJet platform, but with the liquid-metal-jet replaced by a solid copper anode. It could be used for analytical applications such as SAXS and X-ray crystallography when combined with the proper X-Ray optics such as a Montel-type gracing-incidence elliptical multilayer mirror.


This project would involve building a measurement setup to evaluate the performance of the solid X-Ray source in combination with a Montel mirror. The setup would include high-precision motorized linear stages for µm-level alignment of the mirror to the source, a high-resolution X-ray camera for focus size characterization, a calibrated PIN diode for quantitative x-ray flux measurements, and motorized stages for moving the camera and diode.

The next step is to use the measurement setup to evaluate the achievable X-Ray flux, flux density, and focus size, possibly for multiple configurations of the X-ray source. The project will include analysis of the acquired data to compare the performance with that of other x-ray sources. Hopefully there will also be time to use the setup to optimize source settings with respect to application performance and to keep track of source performance over time to determine what source settings can be used for long-term high performance.

Student profile

Many of Excillum’s staff have a background from Engineering Physics which we therefore know is a background that works, but any MSc student with an interest in technology ranging from electronics, software and mechanics all the way to basic physics is welcome to apply. We specifically encourage you to apply if you not only have skills acquired from the university but also like to spend your spare time with a technology-centric hobby.

The project will be carried out at Excillum’s offices in Kista in the spring of 2018. Suggested starting time is January. 

The student will receive monetary compensation upon successful completion of the project. Expenses for travel, materials etc. related to the project are covered by Excillum.
